If you are reading this, I imagine you have at least one bird. If you are like me, you have more than one. Birds are like potato chips, you can't have just one. When I took my latest friend into the vet, he gave me a look and said, "This is the last, isn't it?" It is so easy to take in "just one more", that we just have to know our limits. I could never turn away an avian that needed a helping hand. My favorite rescue was a female cockatiel with torn ligaments in her feet. She never warmed up to me and would hiss every time I came near her, but she loved the mate I put her with. Although it is so tempting to think with our hearts or to get the "I wants", we need to take a just a little time to think if we can really do it right. Do we have the time, room, often money, or patience to do the best for all?
Before you make an impulse buy, do you have a place to isolate the newcomer for 30 days to make sure no new illness is introduced to your established family? Don't forget that vet visit. It is always a good idea to read up on the species you are thinking of, temperments and physical needs do vary. A parakeet is not an amazon. How much time you have is also important. Any bird needs as much time as you can give (if not even more). We don't want to short change anyone. A bigger bird means a larger cage, toys, and more mess. If you want to rescue a bird, please get as much information as you can. How old is it, is it wild caught or hand raised? Is there psychological or physical problems? Are you up for a screamer or a feather plucker? Make sure that you have a lot of patience for a bird with problems, just as you would a child. As with any pet purchase, take you time. Ask questions, get answers, and know your limits. (My limit was 13) Most of all, make sure you have enough love to go around! |
